Find a non-smoker flatmate in Barcelona: matching by explicit smoking position

The onboarding uses three distinct options, not a binary yes/no:

- **I smoke** — active smoker. No restriction specified.

- **I don't smoke and need a smoke-free flat** — no tobacco anywhere in or near the flat, including balconies.

- **I don't smoke but am happy with a flatmate who smokes outdoors** — the intermediate position. Indoors is smoke-free; balcony or outside the building is acceptable.

The first and third positions are the most common source of post-move-in conflict when they are not matched correctly. A smoker who smokes on the balcony believes they are following the rules. A non-smoker who cannot tolerate any smoke in the building's shared air believes the same. Neither is wrong — they are simply incompatible unless identified in advance.

Barcelona flats are compact. Balconies, where they exist, open directly into living rooms or bedrooms. In older buildings in Gràcia, Poble Sec, and El Raval, ventilation patterns mean that smoke on a balcony diffuses into adjacent rooms within minutes.

The city also has one of the highest concentrations of international flatmates of any European city. Expectations about where smoking is acceptable vary across nationalities and are rarely made explicit in listing descriptions.

The matching resolves this by capturing the exact position upfront — not a negotiation after the first week.

When you list your room in Barcelona, the onboarding records your smoking position and the other seven living dimensions. The algorithm crosses that profile against active users in Barcelona who are looking for a room and surfaces those with compatible smoking positions.

If your position is "smoke-free flat, no exceptions", you will not be matched with smokers — even those who claim they smoke only outside.
